26 Jul Different Methods of Hair Extensions
While hair extensions may be unfamiliar to many, according to a poll conducted by Hairtrade.com, 38% of all women use hair extensions as a normal part of their beauty routine.
There are several kinds of hair extension methods available. Because some kinds can damage your hair, it’s advisable to look for non damaging extensions specifically.
Before you buy hair extensions Los Angeles shops offer or visit a hair extension salon, you will want to know what methods and varieties exist. The following are some of the top hair extension methods.
Strand by Strand
The strand by strand hair extension method involves roughly 20 to 40 individual strands of hair, which are attached together on one end with keratin or polyurethane. Strand by strand extensions are attached to small sections of a person’s hair, using either a warm bond (with a heat gun) or a cold fusion (with copper cylinders).
Bonded strand by strand are fastened to the client’s hair with a heating element. The client’s hair will be placed in between a U-tip, then sealed together with the hair extension with a hot extension tool, which melts the keratin glue in the new hair.
Bonds are fastened very close to the hair roots, which means little space is allowed for movement. To add hair volume, 100 to 150 individual strands may be used, while up to 300 strands will be used to increase hair length.
For someone looking specifically for non damaging extensions, the method of strand by strand involving copper cylinders is better for one’s hair than the heat and glue application.
Cold Fusion, I-Tip, or Micro Links
As described above, this method involves pulling small sections of hair through tiny cylinders or beads, then clamping the cylinders closed using pliers. For non damaging extensions, if you’re going to go this route, you should make sure your salon works with high-quality copper cylinders with silicone lining to protect your hair.
A weft of hair is a plurality of hair which is attached at one end. Wefts can be machine made, hand tied, or injection molded, with hand tied wefts being the most expensive. Wefts can be anywhere from one inch to 60 inches wide, but they can be any length.
Instead of being applied as individual strands, wefts are applied as panels in rows across the hair. This application can be completed using either tape, clips, glues, or natural braiding.
Tape-in extensions are somewhat new to the market and tend to be fairly low-cost. They are also possibly the safest method available, providing non damaging extensions for even very sensitive hair. It’s also the fastest way to have hair extensions applied.
Hair extensions using the tape-in method are reusable and can last six to eight weeks per application. They’re the easiest, most comfortable, and arguably most natural looking method currently available, as well.
Hand tied extensions are an excellent choice for people who have thick or coarse hair. Similar to the tape-in method, hand tied extensions are laid down in multiple rows, and are braided into the client’s natural hair.
The glue in method is a short-term hair extension option, as wefts can only be worn for a few days. Simply, wefts are glued to the client’s natural hair. This glue can be dissolved using an oil-based solvent to remove the hair extension after a few days.
The glue in method can be ideal for someone who only wants an extension for the duration of a special event.
Sew in and braided hair extensions (commonly called a weave extension) are also excellent for thick or coarse hair. The client’s natural hair will be braided to form a base for the extensions, after which wefts are actually sewn into the braids with a needle and thread.
For clients looking for non damaging extensions, the sewn in method might not be ideal, as continually wearing one’s natural hair in tight braids can cause damage over time.
For people who want a very temporary solution, and aren’t sure they want to commit to wearing hair extensions long-term, the clip in method is perhaps the most ideal. In this case, wefts of new hair are applied with small, pressure sensitive clips.
This method is ideal for use in preparation for a special occasion. The extensions must be removed before going to bed. This allows for considerably more versatility than traditional hair extensions tend to allow.
